CLEAN PACIFIC conference is designed to bring together stakeholders in spill prevention and response from government, environmental, emergency planning and emergency response industries to discuss lessons-learned, hear best practices, and view new products and solutions from a wide-variety of companies. The 2016 conference agenda covers spill prevention and response for marine, inland waterways, rail and pipeline and is broken out into three tracks: Planning and Preparedness, Prevention, and Response and Recovery.

DNV GL will present the following paper on Thursday, June 23, 2016 at 10:45 am to 12:15 pm session 1E: Waterway Risk Management on Ensuring Safe LNG Bunkering Operations in the U.S.: Regulations, Standards, and Practices presented by Cheryl Stahl, Senior Principal Consultant.

Abstract

The use of LNG as a marine fuel is a relatively new practice in North America. US regulations to assure safe operations are developing nearly concurrently with design and implementation by first starters. Managing environmental and safety risk has two sides: prevention and response. This paper reviews essential risk controls to prevent accidents from LNG bunkering operations. The review will include current US regulations and policies, key safety requirements during design, current industry practices, and best practices taken from operations with similar hazards.
