DNV GL Looks at the Roadmap for Digitalization Including Both Short and Long Term Objectives That Will Transform the Industry
HOUSTON, TX--(February 24, 2016) - Albrecht Grell spends his days focusing on the digital transformation of the maritime industry. This includes transforming key processes and value propositions as well as driving data centered businesses of DNV GL maritime division and governing the respective digital platforms.
Before this, Albrecht supported DNV GL's advisory division with digital solutions that focused on answering questions about operational performance and efficiency as well as on advanced technological challenges. Through this roll he's seen the effects of how everyday data points translate in to real cost savings and solutions.
Recently, Albrecht met with a group of leaders from the International Ship-Owners Alliance of Canada (ISAC) to provide insight on how big data is transforming the maritime industry today. This talk included a look at the DNV GL digitalization roadmap including the organization's objectives and focus areas.
"Big Data is less of a technological innovation, but a new way of thinking about and solving problems. Although it has largely not yet arrived in shipping, we see that the industry is generating massive amounts of data from vessel operations and other sources." Albrect explained. "This data can, and should, be used in a much more comprehensive and effective way," he continued.
A state of the art solution combines several features including the ability to collect data from multiple sources with an adequate amount of data quality management in place. This requires combining these data points, i.e. speed profile, fuel quality, engine performance, etc., to deliver solid analytics that are translated into real life answers to problems.
Currently, the focus is on addressing how the benchmark data compares with other like vessels in the market and then delivering baseline information to evaluate performance. It's then critical that these insights are available around the clock and through a flexible and customizable dashboard that is easy to understand and operate.
