EU Marine Equipment Directive (MED)

Marine Equipment Directive

Gain the “wheelmark” certification for your products used on board ships.

Marine equipment can only be installed on board ships flying the flag of an EU country, Norway, Iceland and other flag states if it is marked with the MED mark of conformity, also known as the “wheelmark”.

DNV GL’s experts provide fast and efficient conformity assessment in accordance with the Marine Equipment Directive 2014/90/EU.

On 23rd July 2014 the European Union (EU) published the new directive on marine equipment 2014/90/EU that repealed directive 96/98/EC with effect from 18th September 2016. With effect from March 16th 2017 the first Implementing Regulation (EU) 2017/306 amending the directive 2014/90/EU was coming into force.

A new electronic tagging standard for better marine equipment safety was presented by European Union (EU) on 23rd April 2018. Manufacturers of marine equipment are allowed to use the electronic tags and will be better protected against counterfeiting as well as can offer their customers additional functions such as stock control. The new standard makes use of RFID (radio-frequency identification) and Data Matrix formatting. See Implementing Regulations (EU) 2018/414 and  (EU) 2018/608.

Your certification process at DNV GL starts with advice on the assessment procedures (modules) relevant for your product. Then we safely guide you through the certification process. This includes your completed MED form and all the other necessary documents as well as testing by a recognised laboratory or with the presence of a DNV GL surveyor. Finally, you achieve approval of your product according to the MED. For Module D or E, a quality audit needs to be performed at your production site. Your MED certificate is immediately issued after completion of the process. All MED certifications will be listed in the DNV GL list of approved suppliers and the MarED-Product Database so that potential customers can easily find you.
